Human Rights Initiative of North Texas Honors Embrey Family Foundation With Prestigious Angel of Freedom Award

line

On November 2, 2009, the Dallas-based Human Rights Initiative (HRI) of North Texas presented its 2009 Angel of Freedom Awards to the Embrey Family Foundation and two other local organizations. The awards ceremony took place at the Trammell & Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art, where president Lauren Embrey accepted the Baccarat crystal Angel of Freedom Award on behalf of the foundation.

The other 2009 honorees were law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP and the Women of Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church.

All three organizations were honored for enabling Human Rights Initiative to better serve its clients and carry out its mission. HRI provides free legal representation and social services to indigent victims of human rights abuses and serves as a community resource on international human rights issues.

HRI clients are refugees and immigrants, many of whom flee their homelands after experiencing torture and imprisonment because of their religious or political beliefs. Although the majority of the agency’s legal caseload involves asylum cases, it also handles matters under the Violence Against Women Act and the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act. These legal services are delivered primarily through the agency’s extensive network of volunteer attorneys.

Each November, the agency pays tribute to organizations and individuals who provide sustained support over time – financial or otherwise – that contribute to these efforts. The Human Rights Initiative Angel of Freedom Award recognizes extraordinary commitment that inspires those associated with the agency to keep striving, to seek out those who need its help and to remember why they do what they do.
