Embrey Family Foundation Sponsors DFW International African Unity Festival on Memorial Day Weekend.

North Texas is an international center in which 40% of the residents are immigrants (foreign-born and their children). DFW International Community Alliance is unique in that it serves as an umbrella for over 1,600 internationally focused organizations. Their efforts have increased the awareness of the changing demographics of the North Texas region and influenced the participation of individuals from diverse backgrounds into mainstream society.

An African Unity Festival was held Memorial Day weekend 2008 to bring together all African communities in an effort to unite, to understand, and to share.

The three elements of the African Unity Festival were:

  1. The DFW Unity Cup was a six week long soccer tournament with the Third Place and Championship games on Saturday, May 31st at the UT Dallas Soccer Field in Richardson.
  2. Sunday, June 1st, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Africa Day at J. Erik Jonsson Central Library featured workshops for children, African arts and crafts and cultural booths.
  3. Sunday, June 1st, 6:30 p.m. Taste of Africa Food Festival and Cultural Evening at the SMU Hughes-Trigg Student Center with dishes from 12 African countries, cultural displays, Parade of Nations and DFW Africa Unity Cup awards.

The Embrey Family Foundation donated $20,000 to help sponsor this event. “This event is a great way to bring unity in the community. We have to learn to work together and learn about each other,” said Lauren Embrey, President of the Foundation.
