Outstanding Foundation Award

The Embrey Family Foundation was recognized by the Greater Dallas Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) as Outstanding Foundation at its 24th Annual National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon. The November 10 event, which honored 2009 award recipients in seven categories, was co-hosted by presenting partner Communities Foundation of Texas and took place at the Hyatt Regency Dallas.

The National Philanthropy Day awards honor individuals and organizations in the community who exemplify commitment, dedication and talent in helping their neighbors. In addition to the Embrey Foundation, the other 2009 winners were Mary and Mike Terry, Outstanding Philanthropists; Mayor Laura Wheat, Town of Westlake, Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser; Dean Foods, Outstanding Corporation; JoLynne Jensen, CFRE, Outstanding Fundraising Executive; Matthew Willis, Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy; and CREW Dallas (Commercial Real Estate Women), Outstanding Philanthropic Organization.

“Without question, such philanthropic efforts play a critical role in our society, providing much-needed funds every year, encouraging civic participation, and improving the quality of life for all people,” said Cheryl Reynolds, National Philanthropy Day chair. “These seven award recipients are an inspiration to so many in the community and beyond.”

In naming the Embrey Family Foundation Outstanding Foundation for 2009, AFP cited its demonstrated commitment to strengthening and improving North Texas by supporting more than 160 endeavors. These span the primary categories of human services, human rights, arts and culture, education, the environment and animal services. In particular, AFP noted the foundation’s significant support of The Dallas Women's Foundation, the Human Rights Education Program at Southern Methodist University (SMU), Big Thought, and Education is Freedom.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals advances philanthropy through advocacy, research, education, and certification programs. AFP currently represents 26,000 members in 172 chapters throughout the world. The Greater Dallas Chapter of AFP was among the first to begin celebrating National Philanthropy Day in 1981.
